I spent a couple of days reviewing the 2015 5th Grade Released Science STAAR test and putting together a program to disseminate information about the test to my blog readers. Every year I do the same thing and think nothing of it. This year was different.
This year I have babies on the brain. I’m thinking about how I want my only-ever-imagined babies’ teachers to spend their time. Do I want them to spend 2 days studying a test? I really, truly don’t.
What would be a better use of time? I want teachers to have time to develop solid, aligned lessons. Perhaps they could meet with their grade levels to share stories of what is working with their students. I want them drinking margaritas and watching football with their families over the weekend. Maybe teachers could conference with students about goal setting. There must be 1,000 things that would be a better use of their time.
I’ll keep studying these tests as they are released. It’s second nature at this point. If kids are going to have to take the test, teachers might as well have the information they need to help them succeed. The day they stop releasing the tests because there are no tests to release, I’m sure I can find something better to do with my time. Until then.
