Picture Book Science: Bugs and Bugsicles

This is the fourth post in my new blog series, Picture Book Science Lessons.  Each post contains a favorite picture book for teaching science concepts and activity ideas to accompany the book.

Bugs and Bugsicles-- ideas and free printable for teaching about insects during winter. Kids will love this one!

Literacy: informational text, comparing and contrasting, non-fiction summary

Focus: I was never exactly sure what some insects did during winter.  All I knew was that they weren’t bothering me!  Now I know.  This book focuses on where 8 types of insects go in the winter.

Title: Bugs and Bugsicles by Amy S. Hansen

Anchor Chart
As a class, make an anchor chart answering the question, “Where do insects go in the winter?”

Compare and Contrast
Determine similarities and differences between some of the insects.

Insect Trading Cards
Each student selects 3 of the insects, draws a picture, and writes about the insect on the card.  There is a pocket included for students to keep them in their notebooks!
