When it’s time to head back to school, I think about all of the expectations that must be taught. Some of those expectations are specific to how we use our science class time. Here are 4 anchor charts that accompany class discussions about our expectations. We can revisit these charts as often as needed throughout the year.
Lab Expectations
Who is responsible for materials? What should students do before they begin? How do students decide who does what? Where do students work? When should the teacher be notified?
Science Stations Expectations
Questions to answer: How do you start stations? How do you move between stations? When do you change stations? What do you do when you finish your station? What do you do with materials? What do you do if you are confused? What do you do if technology isn’t working?
Interactive Notebook Expectations
What needs to be included? What are the expectations for effort? What do you do with materials?
Academic Talk vs. Social Talk
Because we spend so much time in partner work and group work, it’s important to explicitly teach students the difference between academic talk and social talk. What are they? When is each type of talk appropriate? Where is each type of talk appropriate?
