Science in a Snap!

Do you need some quick and quality science lessons that help you address the standards in a short period of time?  I am really excited about this new line of resources geared toward the primary grades!  I used the 2nd grade standards from many states when creating these units, although you may find them appropriate for 1st or 3rd too.  Grab these science units and have some fun!

2nd Grade Science Units

Physical Properties of Matter and Changes to Matter

The first pack focuses on the physical properties of matter and changes to matter.  Brief hands-on activities engage students and let them experience the content.  See it on TpT.

Determine the physical properties (sink or float, state of matter, texture, absorbency, relative mass, and flexibility) of everyday objects.

Make fold-ups for the physical states of matter.

Compare physical properties with a performance task.

Make some eggs to learn about irreversible changes.

Visit 4 interactive physical change stations to explore the effects of sanding, dissolving, folding, and tearing.

Evaporate water and melt ice.

Discuss and organize new information.

Force and Motion

The unit on force and motion engages students in hands-on activities to observe patterns, conduct investigations, and determine cause and effect.  See it on TpT.

Explore how forces stop, start, and change and motion on the playground.

Build a marshmallow popper to determine cause and effect.

Explore force, motion, gravity and friction in 4 fun station activities.

Plan and conduct an investigation to test the effect of friction on toy cars.

Moon Phases

Students learn that the moon reflects our sun’s light, that the moon orbits Earth, and about the phases of the moon.  See it on TpT.

Complete and revisit an anticipation guide about the moon.

Record observations of the moon by observing outside or on an internet moon phase calendar.

Make a phases of the moon wheel.

Learn features of the moon by going on the Apollo 11 Mission.

Life Cycles

Students start by observing an organism’s life cycle in the classroom.  You choose the animal!  Mealworms are easy to care for and observe, but tadpoles are the coolest!  Your students will love observing and recording the big changes each animal goes through.  See this unit on TpT.

Students learn about the human life cycle.  How have they changed since birth?

Learn about the life cycles of penguins, butterflies, crickets, watermelons, and frogs.

Compare and contrast various life cycles.

Compare and contrast incomplete metamorphosis and complete metamorphosis.

Adaptations

Students learn about the external characteristics that help plants and animals survive.  See this unit on TpT.

Observe plants and identify their characteristics.

Conduct a descriptive investigation to observe how water travels through a plant’s stem.

Choose and observe an animal to determine its physical characteristics.

Learn about four different types of camouflage.

Read about an alligator’s adaptations and label a diagram.

Do a hands-on activity to explore the functions of various bird beaks.

Go on a Journey to the Desert to learn about the unique adaptations that help four organisms survive in a severe climate.
